Barbican

Into the Unknown: A Journey through Science Fiction (June 3 – September 1) Original objects and artworks from The Paul G. Allen Family Collection; concept art from films Godzilla, Stargate and Dark City.

Basquiat: Boom for Real (September 21 2017 - January 2018) first large UK exhibition of the painter and New York prodigy, Jean-Michel Basquiat.  The exhibition shows the artist’s wider cultural context via paintings, drawings, notebooks, rare film, photography, music and ephemera.

 

British Library

Jane Austen Among Family and Friends (January 10 2017 – February 19)

Writings from Austen’s teenage years, from the British Library and Bodleian Library collections.  The free display also features family correspondence, memorabilia and Jane Austen’s writing desk

 

Design Museum

NEW OLD: Designing for Our Future Selves (January 12 2017 – February 19 2018), Explores the potential for design to enhance the experience of our later lives.

Imagine Moscow (March 15 – June 4) Marks the centenary of the Russian Revolution by exploring Moscow as it was imagined by architects and designers in the 1920s and early 1930s.

 

HULL

City of Culture 2017 (January 2017 - December 2017). An arts and cultural programme that celebrates the unique character of the city of Hull.  The programme runs from 1 Jan to 31 Dec and is split into four seasons.

 

The Jewish Museum

Amy Winehouse: A Family Portrait (March 16 – September 24) returns after its long stint on the road.  

 

National Gallery

Monochrome: Painting in Black and White (November 1 2017 – February 18 2018) Works on glass, vellum, ceramic, silk, wood, and canvas. Rembrandt, Picasso, and Gerhard Richter (1932–) displays the fascinating history of black-and-white painting.

 

Science Museum

Robots (February 8 – September 9) A fascinating exhibition of the 500-year story of humanoid robots.  The artistic, philosophic and scientific quest to understand what it means to be human. 100 robots will be featured in the displays.

 

UK Wide

BBC Proms: the world’s greatest classical music festival (July 14 - September 9)

Each year the BBC hosts a classical music season over two months in the summer at the Royal Albert Hall and venues across the UK, culminating in The Last Night of the Proms performances.

 

V&A

The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains (opens May 13), The first international retrospective of the band. The V&A’s flair for successful music themed exhibitions looks like it will be repeated.

 

Wellcome Collection

Electricity: The spark of life (February 23 – June 25) The story of the quest to understand, unlock and control electricity.  A force that exists from the building blocks of the universe to the human brain.
