THE MINIMAL SELECTION

WILLIAM BASINSKI - THE DISINTEGRATION LOOPS

The serendipity behind this minimalist masterpiece is remarkable. In 2001, New York composer Basinski was digitising some magnetic tape loops he made in the 1980s, but found they had decayed significantly. He recognized a mournful beauty in their decomposition, and completed the project on the morning of 9/11. The 4 sets of loops now accompany a film Basinski made on his balcony that evening of the Manhattan skyline, and together they serve as a gravely poignant memoir of the day’s tragic events.
